Since opening its doors in 1969, the Gulf Coast Center has been providing mental health and mental retardation (MHMR) services for residents of Brazoria and Galveston counties. The Center also offers substance abuse recovery programs under the sponsorship of the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.


The Luke Society Clinic

Saturday morning assistance
The Luke Society Medical Mission to the Homeless operates an open-air clinic to help meet the health needs of the homeless in Galveston. Staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses and lay workers, the clinic is held each Saturday morning in the parking lot behind the First Presbyterian Church of Galveston at the corner of 20th and Church Streets. Clinic services include screening for medical problems and basic treatment of wounds and infections. There is no fee for clinic services.

Quality Health Care in Your Community The staff at Mainland Medical Center is dedicated to providing their patients quality health care close to home. Each year, over 62,000 outpatient procedures are performed and more than 8,000 persons are admitted to MMC from the greater Galveston County area.

St. Vincent's House provides comprehensive social service ministry and community outreach programs for the entire family. Located on Galveston Island, St. Vincent's House serves the disadvantaged and underserved population of the greater Galveston community with programs to enhance their mental, physical and spiritual well being.

The UTMB, Office of Community Outreach works in collaboration with t he Teen Health Center, Inc. to staff the Teen Health Clinics located at Ball High School, Central Middle School and Austin Middle School in Galveston, as well as Blocker Middle School in Texas City. The clinics provide preventive and primary health and mental health care, health education, and health referrals to students in schools through on-site health centers. During the 2002-2003 school year, clinic personnel provided services to nearly 6,100 clients.

The Galveston County Senior Citizens Program (GCSCP) was established in 1976 to serve the needs of senior adults who are 60 years of age and older. The focus of the program is to enable individuals to continue being an integral part of their community, while keeping their dignity and sense of well being. The goal of GCSCP is to enrich the lives of senior adults in Galveston County.
